Butterfly Project "Night In The Ghetto"

"Night In The Ghetto"
Another day has gone for keeps
Into the bottomless pit of time.
Again it has wounded a man, held captive
By his brethren.
After dusk, he longs for bandages,
for soft hands to shield the eyes
From all the horrors that stare by day.
But in the ghetto, darkness, too, is kind
To weary eyes that all day long
Have to watch.

Dawn crawls again alon the ghetto streets
Embracing all who walk this way.
Only a car like a greeting from a long-gone world
Gobbles up the dark with fiery eyes-
That sweet darkness that falls upon the soul
And heals those wounds illuminated by the day...
Along the streets come light and ranks of people
Like a long black ribbon loomed with gold

  2. Extremely descriptive!! You put so much effort in your explanations, giving photos to help give a better and more understood description. However, on some tags you drift off from the idea or meaning you are describing. I believe it's due to the massive amount of info you must output. Although, I do appreciate the extra info being given. You did a great job dividing the two parts of the butterfly by Hitler's party and the jewish prisoners. It makes your butterfly unique, keep up the fantastic work!

  4. Your butterfly looks very simple and well made. I do see that you didn't add any titles on what your tags are about. This causes people to have to evaluate the text to see what tags yours are about. Also, the gun and the shovel have no direct meanings to your butterfly. I say that because you never put a tag explaining it or you did put a tag and just didn't mention that it was for either the gun or the shovel.

  5. Melissa, you did a fantastic job on your butterfly! Your perspective on some of the lines is very unique, such as providing a black ribbon to represent the lines of people grieving with little hope. I like how you contrasted day and night. Night, you would think, is a time were evil and injustice prevails(as the Nazi's still did), yet the poet stated that it is a time of peace and regain of strength. The portrait in the middle of the butterfly really shows the poem's idea. I agree in the way that the mood is a somber, melancholic one. The fact that you put effort into this is extremely evident, as your butterfly is very high in quality.
Alas, there were somethings I think you could do better and correct. You could have provided some more information regarding as to what the black ribbon symbolizes, as I had to read the poem(not a bad thing) and read your other tags to understand what the ribbon means. There were some grammatical errors in a couple of your tags, which can be easily fixed. Although you did meet the tag requirements, you could have added a few more tags explaining the Nazi sun, the Jew moon, and the objects that pertained to each side.

  6. Excellent work, Melissa! I like the dual nature of night and day, Nazi and Jew, that forms the core of the butterfly. Every artifact has an opposite: the bound hands have the salute, the soldier has the prisoner, the eagle has the tattoo.... It's quite clever. However, your tags have a few grammatical errors. This is to be expected (nobody's perfect). Additionally, your symbolism seems to be inverted (the day is fearful and evil while the night is heroic and benevolent), which is confusing at first...but then I realized. People's lives were turned upside down, inside out, ended and resumed at random. The symbols also reveal a critical truth: a night's rest can make a lot of things better, or at least decrease the awfulness of it all. All in all, you did great!

  7. I like how you divided your butterfly the sides between the night and day which represents the Nazis and the Jewish community. After reading the poem I thought this was very powerful, the need of happiness having to be in the night instead of the morning. I think you did a very good job on your butterfly.
