AOW 12/10/15

Are toys the only things that effect children?

1) What is the author’s purpose and what does the author use in her writing to support this purpose? Please make sure to include textual support and interpretation.
The author's purpose in writing this is to convince people that we need more gender neutral stores. For example in the text, "But at this point, toy stores have been gender-coded for so long, that retailers now claim that changing the layout of the store would confuse and deter shoppers" This proves that the gender segregation has been in effect so long that people are afraid to change it. Also the excuse they use is more focused on the business aspect, which gives the impression that they don't care about the kids.

2) What is the argument in this article? Make sure to use a direct quote from the article. What specific claims are mentioned to support the argument? Include reasons through textual evidence and interpretation.
The argument is that color segregation s to blame for the lack of female STEM careers. In the text it says,"…the only STEM options they're really offered are chemistry sets that help create makeup…" This shows that from a young age girls are being pushed away from any STEM careers. This also makes it difficult for girls interested in STEM to find thing that relate to that.

3) What is the counterargument in this article? Make sure to use a direct quote from the article. What does the author do to negate the counterargument?

The counterargument is that boys also have a difficult time if their interest are more in the girl area. As stated in the text,"…boys are endlessly bullied if they want to try on a tiara." The author negates this by explaining the way things were, and then explaining why the problem is not yet solved. Although only excuses are given as an answer.

4) Do toy companies have a responsibility to children that play with their products, if so, what is it? What do you think of this issue? Why?

I believe that responsibility to not have toys take take away a possibility for the child. I think this issue will only harm both the parents/children and the company. I believe this because the parents want what is best for their children if the children are harmed it will make them fell bad and they will no longer buy products from the compony. Overall they both lose.

5)"This earnest educational toy might have gone unnoticed amidst the babies and Barbies if it weren’t for a hit viral video ad campaign showing little girls getting bored with a princess show and leaping up to create a giant Rube Goldberg machine out of toys." Based on this quote, what can you conclude about the impact of technology on our Society?

I conclude that technology has had a massive impact on society. There are many recourses and topics that we would not have had access to without it.  it would be easy to try to hide information because most would be passed on orally. Technology gives people a chance to find out what is happening around the world.

Nonfiction Blog 11/30/15 - Girls Think of Everything by Catherine Thimmesh

I recently read about a girl named Alexia Abernathy, she invented the no spill bowl. She was eleven when she made a bowl for her babysitter's son who spilled his cereal every morning. She made it with two tupperware bowls, a larger rim and a smaller bowl. She sold it to a company and it is now on shelves at major stores like Wal-Mart
"Hi. I'm  Alexia Abernathy, and I'm an eleven year old inventor." I found this interesting because many people think that children can't invent things. When thinking of an inventor most picture an older man with more experience. However this proves that people of any age can make the world better.
Some things I learned were that common things like chocolate chip cookies and even White Out were total accidents. It is amassing to me that things we take for granted were complete and total mistakes. The fact is although they are under rated many accidents are essential to are modern life. Many people scoff at the way things were but frankly life wouldn't be the same if they didn't exist.
